The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1978. The first set of students in the department were admintted for the ND programme in the 1978/79 academic session and passed out in 1982/83 session.
The department started with two lecturers, two instructors and three technologists. Four workshops and three laboratories were established simultaneously with the department namely: Machine worshop, Fitting workshop, Welding and Fabrication workshop, Automotive workshop, Thermodynamis laboratory, Fluid Mechanics laboratory and Materials laboratory.
The department was first accredited in 1982 for both ND and HND programmes. The following options were accredited at HND level: Production Engineering Technology, Plant Engineering Technology and Material Technology. During the second accreditation exercise in 1988, only the ND programme was accredited following the reorganized NBTE requirements.
But in 1993, the third process was carried out by the NBTE and the following options were accredited to ND programmes: Production Engineering Technology and Automotive Engineering Technology.
Previously, the department runs five accredited programmes at the HND level; Automotive Engineering Technology, Plant/Power Engineering Technology, Building Services/Refrigeration Engineering Technology, Production Engineering Technology and Machine Building Engineering Technology. It has well qualified academic personnel (36 in number) and additional workshops and laboratories in accordance with the NBTE requirements.
Due to the current policy of NBTE, the five options have been streamlined into two. Viz:
1. Plant and Power Engineering Technology and;
2. Manufacturing Engineering Technology.
